KRS-ONE “Classic” Hip Hop History 1973-1986 by Akira Productions
We will begin about the history between KRS-ONE and I. The journey with KRS-ONE first started in 2008 at the Roxy Club in Hollywood where we went there just for photography and ended up connecting with his manager Mondo and hypeman, Non Stop. We (Me and Jeff from Warning tv) documented that show then led to several other shows from San Diego, Long Beach, Cal Poly Pomona, Bakersfield, to Berkeley. After documenting live shows and speeches we got the call about the Stop the Violence Movement recording at the LA Recording school with a plethora of big name artists like: The Game, Busta Rhymes, Nelly, Chamillionaire, and more. There was a significant meeting with KRS-ONE and Nelly because they were in the movie, BEEF, where they had disagreements with each other. It turned out, the producer, Duane Darock randomly saw Nelly at the gas station down the street and invited Nelly to go there on the spot!
This was edited with KRS-ONE himself! There was one point where we were confused about the camera KRS had and why it wouldn’t upload. Ended up looking on the internet, making phone calls, and we were frustrated about to give up. Found out he bought the camera in Europe, therefore it was in an European format, PAL. In result, it allowed for his footage from Atlanta to be included with Busta, Cassidy, Fat Joe, etc. Here’s the link to it http://www.youtube.com/user/WarningTv#p/a/u/2/vWmbsRuDQ3Y
Fast forward to February of 2011. We found out KRS-ONE was going to speak and have a performance at Fresno State college. Called Jeff out from Oakland to reunite to document this event like we did in ‘08. We ended up documenting his speech to follow with his performance at the Satellite Student Union, one of the angles included in the video. It was there we (Esquaire) negotiated for KRS-ONE to perform at Karma, a club in Fresno with two days notice. Here’s a link to the promo video from the Satellite Student Union with the multi-talented beat boxer/lyricist, Optimus Prime. Here’s a link to it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzIyxKGNi5g&feature=relmfu
The second and main part of the footage from the video was KRS-ONE’s performance at Club Karma. It was very intimate and was the jumpoff for Club Karma before they officially opened. Here’s a video of Fresno’s IXL freestyling over KRS-ONE deejaying! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0vlL6p6sq4&feature=relmfu
The third part of the video was from Santa Clara at the Avalon club with KRS-ONE/Murs sharing the bill. Me, Esquaire, (Requejo Productions) got the call to document this and here’s a link to KRS-ONE’s 2012 performance with his son Deejaying. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEe2B19Y5zI&feature=channel_video_title
Lately, I’ve been working on an Optimus Prime/KRS-ONE video then was inspired by this ‘classic’ verse of KRS-ONE’s ‘edutainment’ explaining the chronological origins of hip hop. I used the best audio from the 3 performances then clipped the other pieces on top. This is what I feel proud to release to the world. Below is the description of the video and enjoy!
